About Kim K.

Hey folks! My name is Kim, and I am a forth-year combined honors student in Humanities and Biology.

If I could recommend one thing it would be to use your first year to your advantage. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Theres so much you might not yet know and finding out is all a natural part of the university experience, learn how you study, found out what you love to do and surround yourself with people who march your energy. Just trying one new thing could bring out talents you didn’t know you had! A bad grade is not the be-all and end-all of your university career. You will have setbacks but that only makes for even stronger comebacks! Another tip I would offer is don’t be afraid to reach out. First year can be daunting, but you are not alone. Your professors, TA’s, academic advisors, and us here at the SSSC are happy to offer suggestions and point you in the right direction to help you succeed!

During my first year I joined Sock ‘n’ Buskin’, Carleton’s student theatre company and continued to be involved with them throughout my university career! In my second year, I also tried fencing which was completely new for me, but I really enjoyed the experience. Last year I started a bit of swing dance within the larger Ottawa community. Theres a lot to get involved with both within and beyond the university. Ottawa’s got a lot of little secrets…stay vigilant folks :) Within campus however I have been incredibly involved in the residence community both working as a Community Developer and a Residence Fellow. Next year I will be returning as a Residence Fellow so if you see me around feel free to say hi!

Balancing school, other interests and responsibilities can be challenging at times, but being involved has made me stay focused when I needed to get schoolwork done while providing a creative outlet and an opportunity to meet some really great people. Outside of my involvement at Carleton, I enjoy figure skating, biking, playing board games, and do some work as a Brigantine sailor!

For the past two years I have had the pleasure of being a mentor here at the SSSC and last year was able to work as the team lead of the Community Team. We accomplished so much last year, and I am really proud of our team. I am absolutely delighted to be back in this capacity! Besides the SSSC and the various clubs and communities on campus, many faculties will also organize activities for students to take part in at their leisure. Finding such a positive and supportive environment at Carleton, has made me a passionate learner and excited for the next chapter of university!

So, whether you have questions about classes, studying, activities at Carleton or just to have a friendly face around the campus, feel free to reach out!
