Assess your math skills, review fundamental knowledge, and earn a bonus mark in your first-year math courses all at your own pace!
MATH4U is a specially designed math refresher resource for first-year students entering degree programs at Carleton with a math component. Starting August 1st gain access to a multitude of review and diagnostic resources which will help build a strong base of mathematics knowledge, study techniques to help approach subject material, and confidence as you enter first-year university math courses. Participation in this program ensures that students have the building blocks they need to participate and succeed in math-intensive university programs and their first year math courses!
What is Covered in MATH4U?
Material is split up based on Faculty to allow students to cater their review to their specific needs. The lectures will cover a variety of basics such as:
- Algebra (basic algebra, intervals, and simplifying algebraic expressions)
- Equations (solving equations and inequalities, special formulas)
- Graphs
- Transcendental functions
- Trigonometry
Earn a Bonus Mark in Your First Year Math Course!
In addition to gauging your math comprehension, completing the 1% Bonus Quiz within MATH4U will earn you a 1% bonus mark in all your fall and winter first-year Carleton math course! To qualify for this 1% bonus you are only required to complete the 1% Bonus Quiz within the module that best describes your major (Science and Engineering, Business and Economics, or Physics and Engineering-Physics). You will have until Friday, January 24th at 11:59 EST to complete this quiz and qualify for the bonus mark. We highly recommend completing these quizzes as 1% can make a significant difference in your final grade. Additionally, these diagnostic quizzes will help you identify the math concepts you may wish to review early in your first year MATH courses, while guiding you to the corresponding MATH4U modules you can use to review these concepts. See the course Brightspace page for more details.
For those who are taking first year math courses in both the fall and winter terms:
The 1% bonus quiz you need to complete for the Winter term is the same quiz you completed in the Fall term. If you completed the quiz in the Fall term, you will not be required to do it again in the Winter term and you will automatically get the bonus mark in your Winter term courses. However, if you attended a MATH4U mentoring in the Fall session and did not complete the quiz during the Fall term, you must complete the MATH4U quiz on the Brightspace page to receive the 1% Bonus Mark for your Winter term math course.
For those who do not have math classes in the fall term and only the winter term your deadline to complete this quiz is Friday, January 24th.
Students will have until Friday, January 24th at 11:59pm EDT to complete the 1% Bonus Quiz and earn the bonus mark. Following the due date the diagnostic quizzes and all MATH4U content will remain available for the remainder of the 2024-2025 academic year, however completion of them will no longer earn students a bonus mark.
