About Ansh S.
Hey there! I’m Ansh, and I will be entering into my fourth year of Computer Science with a concentration in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and a minor in Statistics. Apart from being a full-time Halo nerd, I enjoy hitting the gym, watching anime, and grinding souls games.
If there is one piece of advice I’d like to give to every incoming first-year student, it would be to get out of your comfort zone and talk to as many people as possible since developing social skills helps out a lot more than you might think. Joining clubs and various other group activities around campus are some of the best places to meet new people. I would also like to add that take your studies at your own pace and look at your own progress rather than focusing on what others have achieved.
During my first year here at Carleton, due to being mid-pandemic, I unfortunately had no in-person lectures but due to the numerous events that took place in residence, I was able to meet up with a lot of like-minded people and ended up making some terrific friends that have ultimately helped me in my university journey. In my second year, I attended various hackathons and coding competitions that helped me socialize even more. I truly believe that building meaningful connections is fundamental to having the “university experience” and is as essential as getting good grades as it’s the people that care about you that end up being the ones to get you up whenever you find yourself in tough situations.
In the end just remember, entering university is (probably) everyone's first experience of adulthood and as such represents a massive shift. It can be overwhelming at first but almost everyone is facing similar challenges so make friends and face them together – seeing a familiar face every day might just be what gets you through "those days". Also, don't be hesitant to reach out if you have any questions, I'm more than happy to help :)
