About Shenda F.
Hi all! I’m Shenda, a 3rd year student in Neuroscience and Mental Health at Carleton. This year will be my second year being a mentor at the SSSC, and I am so excited to ease the transition from high school to university for you all. When I’m not studying, you can find me strolling along the canal for some me time, strumming my guitar in a jam session, lifting weights in the gym on campus, or whipping up baked goods!
Lately, I have discovered the value of journaling and self-reflection. I find writing like I’m having a conversation with myself helps me identify more clearly what my goals are, how I am feeling, and why I do what I do. Essentially, I know myself more. It is one thing to be on the journey of figuring out who you are and what you want, but it is another to have the courage to take action. For that, I strongly encourage first-year students to power through the fear and doubt - to ask for and listen to the valuable stories people share. Remember, it’s completely normal to have doubts and fears, but I strongly urge you to not let them stop you from exploring what YOU want and how to achieve it. Got a dream job? Ever wonder about how to get into med school? Scared you “don’t have what it takes?” Do you doubt that it is even what you want to do? Not sure if the program you are enrolled in is right for you? The Carleton Community and I want you to succeed, so battle through that internal dialogue and ask away!
It is a great idea to get involved in what you’re passionate about, especially when life gets busy. Being part of the Carleton Dance Lab, serving as a First-Year Representative and mentor at the SSSC, and managing Carleton SciSoc’s TikTok account have not only improved my communication, leadership, and teamwork skills but also helped me build meaningful relationships that motivate me to work towards a better me.
With all that said, please do not hesitate to reach out to me or come by the SSSC because we’re more than happy to help! Looking forward to meeting you, and take care for now!
