Hi everyone!
My name is Fatima, and I’m in my 4th year of Computer Science in the Software Engineering stream. This is my third year with the SSSC, and I’m really excited to be a part of the team again! Although I’m going to be on co-op this year, I’m still looking forward to participating in the upcoming events! Outside of school and work, I love spending time with my friends and family, listening to music, and being active. I really like basketball and volleyball which I recently started playing again.
Over the past three years, I've had the opportunity to dive into a variety of experiences. In my second year, I joined the SSSC as a mentor, and by my third year, I was one of the team leads for the Computer Science Team where I had the chance to host multiple events. Beyond my involvement in the SSSC, I’ve been a TA for a couple of COMP courses, where I’ve helped students with different concepts and making sure they succeed in their CS courses. I also had the chance to gain experience in my field through different co-op and internship opportunities. Through my professional experience, I got to attend multiple events where I had the chance to meet other industry professionals from different companies, Alumni from multiple schools, and other interns/coop students. All of this has helped me meet new people, network, travel, and build amazing connections!
If there is one advice, I would give to first-year students, it would be to take full advantage of the opportunities available to you. Get involved in clubs and organizations, seek out mentorship and networking opportunities, and don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Balancing your academic responsibilities with extracurricular activities will not only enhance your university experience but also help you build a strong professional network and develop skills that will be valuable to your career. Remember, the connections you make and the experiences you gain during your time in university can open doors and provide you with a solid foundation for your future endeavours!
