About Tori R.
Hello everyone!
My name is Tori, and I am in my fourth year of the Neuroscience and Biology Combined Honours program with a minor in Forensic Psychology! This is my fourth year working with the SSSC - this year as Team Lead of the Health Care team. I love to cook, read, and spend time with friends and family when Iām taking time away from my studies!
If I could offer one piece of advice for incoming first-year students, it would undoubtably be to keep an open mind! My first year at Carleton was a defining year for my academic career, as I began my journey in a BA program. Throughout the course of my first-year, I discovered my passion for the brain and knew I needed to make a change. Despite the challenges that followed, I switched into the program that fit for me. This experience taught me that changing my mind and following the less obvious path is more than okay, and keeping an open mind throughout your academic career is crucial!
Throughout my experience at Carleton, I have gotten involved with various extracurriculars! Last year, I was Co-Team Lead of the Health Care Team here at the SSSC, which provided me with the experience necessary to communicate effectively with others and build my leadership skills. This year I will be taking on the role of Team Lead of the Neuroscience Peer Mentors Program, which offers support to students taking first and second year neuroscience courses. In the past I have been a Volunteer Notetaker with the Paul Menton Centre, and the VP Communications for the CU Pre-Medical Society for the past three years. Additionally, I have gotten involved in research both on- and off-campus, allowing me to develop critical thinking and organizational skills, while contributing to the greater science community.
Getting involved in the Carleton Science community has elevated my university experience and has provided me with many valuable skills and memories. I was definitely intimidated once beginning my academic journey in science and felt as though getting involved would be at the back of my mind. However, once seeing all the wonderful opportunities Carleton has to offer, I knew I wanted to get involved. Joining clubs and various activities at Carleton has made me more connected to my school community as a whole and has allowed me to meet some wonderful people and career opportunities! I encourage getting involved, in any capacity, to all incoming students as it makes the transition into university much more manageable!
With all that said, I hope to you reach out to the SSSC or myself for any concerns, advice, or someone to talk to throughout this year; we are here to support your success! š
