About Jason S.

Hello everyone! I’m Jason, a third-year Computer Science major. I’m originally from a small town called Saint-Hubert in Quebec, then I moved to Toronto for a few years before settling in Ottawa for high school. Some of my favorite hobbies include reading books, running 5ks, playing volleyball, and making music. I’m thrilled to be part of the SSSC Mentoring Team this year!

My advice to incoming first-year students is to actively step out of your comfort zone. This could be to strike up a conversation with the person sitting beside you in class, join an intramural sports team, or explore an elective that piques your curiosity. You might be pleasantly surprised by the potential deep bonds and new experiences you’ll encounter. As the saying goes, a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet.

Before coming to Carleton, I spent a year studying Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ottawa. My first year was almost fully remote due to the pandemic, limiting my campus life experiences and opportunities to make new connections. However, I was able to meet some great people through volleyball intramurals, which were thankfully still active. Determined for a change upon transferring to Carleton, I created many core memories in my first year here. Although I am extremely introverted, having grown up mostly shy and quiet, I organized a volleyball intramural team and explored multiple clubs that aligned with my interests, such as the Raven’s Men Volleyball team, ACAC, CCSS, CUKI, and the Glee Club. These experiences transformed me into the lively, outgoing, and involved person I had always hoped to become.

My involvement in all these activities completely reshaped my perspective from my first year’s online experience. Diving into university life, making new friends, and pushing past my boundaries have been incredibly rewarding. I encourage everyone to embrace change and these opportunities—you might surprise yourself with how much you can grow and what you can achieve.

Feel free to drop by the SSSC to have a chat or to ask questions! I can’t wait to meet you through the SSSC ☺
