About Mekedes A.
Hi, I’m Mekedes! 😊I am currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Biology. Last year, I was a Computer Science team lead and mentor, and I’m excited to be returning as a mentor for the upcoming academic year!
Outside of my studies, I love to crochet, practice yoga, paint, run, and spend time with family and friends. I am also obsessed with the show Brooklyn Nine-Nine(or any Michael Schur show), so if you have any similar recommendations, please do let me know!
One piece of advice I would give incoming first-year students is to put your energy and time into things you can control. University life is full of unpredictable moments, so it’s important to focus on areas where you can make active changes rather than stressing over the uncontrollable. Additionally, something that has been incredibly helpful for me is to organize all my deadlines in a calendar at the beginning of the term. This has kept me on track, especially when the semester gets overwhelming.
During my time at Carleton, I have had the opportunity to be both a volunteer and participant in various events. Last year, I helped start a new CUSA club, HealthTech Innovators, and will continue as the VP of Events. I have also been a general executive at Visual Arts Carleton (VAC) for the past two years and have volunteered with countless organizations on campus. I regularly attend events hosted by clubs such as the African Students' Association (ASA), the Eritrean-Ethiopian Students' Association (EESA), the Science Student Success Centre (SSSC), and the Innovation Hub, where I participated as an incubator member.
These involvements have enhanced my university experience and allowed me to build connections outside of an academic setting with people who share similar interests. It’s a beautiful thing — I got to meet people with completely different experiences, which showed me different perspectives and helped me find a sense of community.
As a mentor, I am here to provide guidance and resources to help mentees achieve a successful academic journey at Carleton. Please reach out to me or the SSSC team if you have any questions or would just like to chat :)
