Hi, I’m Mekedes! I am currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Biology. I’m really excited to be a mentor for the upcoming academic year. Outside of my studies, I love to crochet, practice yoga, paint, run, and have recently started exploring all possible trails in Ottawa. I am also obsessed with the show Brooklyn 99, so if you have any similar recommendations, please do let me know!
One piece of advice I would give incoming first-year students is to put your energy and time into things you can control. University life is full of unpredictable moments, so it’s important to focus on areas where you can make active changes rather than stressing over the uncontrollable. Additionally, something that has been incredibly helpful for me is to organize all my deadlines in a calendar at the beginning of the term. This has kept me on track, especially when the semester gets overwhelming.
During my time at Carleton, I have had the opportunity to be both a volunteer and participant in various events. This is my second year as a general executive at Visual Arts Carleton (VAC). I volunteered with the CUSA Women's Centre last year and am currently involved in starting a new club, HealthTech Innovators (HTI). I also regularly attend events hosted by clubs such as the African Students' Association (ASA), the Eritrean-Ethiopian Students' Association (EESA), the Science Student Success Centre (SSSC), and the Innovation Hub, where I participated as an incubator participant. These involvements have enhanced my university experience and allowed me to build connections outside of an academic setting with people who share similar interests. It’s a beautiful thing — I got to meet people with completely different experiences, which showed me different perspectives and helped me find a sense of community.
