About Janice C.

Hi! My name is Janice, and I’m a second-year Honours Biology student with a concentration in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I grew up in the Caribbean and am returning to Canada after a very long time, so starting university here was both exciting and a big adjustment. This is my second year with the SSSC—I was a First Year Representative last year, and I’m excited to be returning as a Peer Mentor and the First-Year Rep Team Lead.

During my first year, I had the opportunity to work as a third-year Biochemistry lab assistant and join a biochemistry research lab on campus. These experiences helped shape my passion for STEM and gave me a deeper appreciation for hands-on learning and scientific discovery. They also allowed me to connect with faculty, develop new skills, and explore research early in my degree. As someone who benefitted from being involved on campus from the start, I’m passionate about helping other students find their place and make the most of what the Faculty of Science has to offer. Whether it's joining clubs, attending events, or pursuing research, there’s so much to get involved in.

One piece of advice I’d give to new students is to be open to opportunities—even ones that feel a little outside your comfort zone. You never know where they’ll lead or who you’ll meet. University is a time to explore, try new things, and build connections that will support you throughout your journey.

If you ever want to chat about science, getting involved, or university life in general, feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to help and I look forward to meeting everyone
