About Fatemeh A.

Hello Ravens!
My name is Fatemeh. I’m in my second year of my PhD in Data Science, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence at Carleton, and this is my first year as an SSSC mentor. I’m super excited to join the team and connect with incoming students this year. When I’m not working on research, I’m probably adding to my Funko Pop collection or building a new LEGO set.

If there’s one thing I wish someone had told me in my first year, it’s that asking for help is normal and honestly, necessary. Whether it’s about classes, mental health, or just figuring out how things work, you don’t have to do it all alone. University can feel like a lot at first, but people here truly want to support you. Even asking a small question can make things way less stressful. So don’t be shy! Reach out, talk to someone, and send that message. I recommend checking in with places like the SSSC or other support services at Carleton. You’d be surprised how much just asking can help. Also, try to get involved in as many activities as you’re interested in it’s one of the best ways to meet people, explore what you enjoy, and make your university experience more fun and fulfilling.

I did my undergrad in statistics, and I’ve realized along the way that being in a science major makes you a detective of the universe. You're always asking questions, solving puzzles, and figuring out how things work. It can be tricky sometimes, but that makes it so rewarding. Maybe that’s also why I’ve always loved activities like board game nights and escape rooms, they’re just a fun way to keep that curious, problem-solving side going outside of class too. So, try to keep an eye out for game night posters around campus, you might be surprised how much fun you’ll have and who you’ll meet!

Another favorite part of my week is taking Zumba classes at Carleton Athletics. It’s such a fun, high-energy way to take a break from screen time and research. Or as Phil Dunphy wisely said: “When in doubt, dance it out! “Whether I’m figuring out code or choreography, it helps me stay mentally and physically balanced.

Getting involved in these kinds of activities has made my university experience more enjoyable and less overwhelming. They’ve helped me manage stress, meet new people, and feel like I belong here as a student and as part of the community.

See you around campus! and remember, get involved, stay curious, and have fun along the way!
