About Sarah M.
Hey everyone! My name is Sarah M. and I am going into my third year of Health Sciences with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences. This will be my second year as a peer mentor at the SSSC and I am really excited to be part of the Kick Start into Science-Medical School Preparation/Health Care Team.
If I could give one advice to incoming first-year students, it would be to maintain a balanced schedule. Always make sure that you are not overloading yourself with work and making time for activities that you love. Balancing your academics with social activities will make everything much more enjoyable and rewarding. It is also important to get involved and make connections with new people to have the best experience at Carleton.
Last year, I was involved in various activities, such as the SOAR Student Leadership Conference, the Health Sciences Society, and the Science Student Success Centre, where I had the opportunity to meet many great people. Last summer, I had the pleasure of working on my Dean's Summer Research Internship at Dr. Ken Storey's lab, where I studied the molecular mechanisms and pathways that allow various animals to become tolerant to harsh environmental conditions. This summer, I was awarded the NSERC summer research internship and have continued my research at Dr. Storey’s lab.
Being involved was one of the best decisions that I have made as it gave me a chance to meet amazing people, create new connections, and make my experiences at Carleton memorable. My involvement in these activities has had a great impact on my academic and social life as I have learned many valuable things that will help me in my academic career as well as my future.
Outside of school, I enjoy camping, swimming, reading, drawing, and playing badminton. If you have questions at any time, please feel free to drop by the SSSC! I look forward to meeting you all!
