About Sarah M.

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah M. and I am going into my third year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Dalhousie University. At Carleton, I completed three years of the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) with a concentration in Biomedical Sciences program. This will be my fifth year as a peer mentor at the SSSC and I am really excited to continue being part of the Kick Start into Science: Medical School Preparation Team.

If I could give one advice to incoming first-year students, it would be to maintain a balanced schedule. Always make sure that you are not overloading yourself with work and making time for self-care and other activities that you love. Balancing your academics with any social activities will make everything much more enjoyable and rewarding. It is also important to get involved to make connections with new people and have the best experience at Carleton.

Throughout my undergrad at Carleton, I was involved in various activities, such as the SOAR Student Leadership Conference, the Health Sciences Society, and the Science Student Success Centre, where I had the opportunity to meet and connect with many great people. In the summer after my first year, I had the pleasure of working on my Dean's Summer Research Internship (DSRI) at Dr. Ken Storey's lab, where I studied the molecular mechanisms and pathways that allow various animals to become tolerant to harsh environmental conditions. I then continued my research at Dr. Storey’s lab through the NSERC summer research internship.

Being involved was one of the best decisions that I have made, as it gave me a chance to meet amazing people, create new connections, and further develop my time management skills. My time at Carleton provided me with the experiences and opportunities that have allowed me to begin my journey in the Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Outside of school, I enjoy camping, swimming, baking, reading, drawing, and playing badminton and basketball.

If you have any questions or would like to chat, please don’t hesitate to drop by the SSSC! I look forward to meeting you all!
