The Science Student Success Centre (SSSC) team knows that the transition from high school to university can be an exciting but sometimes challenging one. The team wants to make sure that every student pursuing a degree in science at Carleton University has an opportunity to be successful, and will work hand in hand with other departments on campus to help students find and stick to a path that best suits their academic and professional goals.
The team at the centre is made up of students, staff, and faculty who know what students need to succeed in science. Whether incoming students begin their studies in the fall or winter semester, the SSSC team will be there to make sure they start off on the right foot. Student will be encouraged to introduce themselves to an SSSC mentor to help set up their first-year schedule.
During each semester, the SSSC team will collaborate with other on-campus departments to offer sessions, workshops, and activities that will help to develop students' academic and professional skills. These regular events will include sessions on study skills, career orientation, summer jobs, how to get involved in research, and how to get prepared for medical school among other things. The SSSC team will also take an active role in helping students that struggle in their first-year science courses. The volunteer teams attached to the Centre will be the main driving force behind events during the year, so quality candidates committed to the development and advancement of their colleagues in the Faculty of Science will be needed to ensure the Centre meets its goals.
